cant join win2ks server to win2k DC server through vpn

I have a server running win2k in one location. I want to join a new server in a diffrent location using vpn. when i input the domain name that i want to join, the server comes back and tells me its unreachable. i know my vpn is working. i do have a website with the same name as my domain name. can this becouse my new server is trying to join my website instead of my dc?

Do you have a WINS server involved at either location? Is your client pointing at a DNS server that is part of the AD domain and accepts dynamic updates (and has the proper SRV records in the zone for the domain)? The solution might be to create a temporary entry in the LMHOSTS file on the server that points it at a DC for the domain that you are trying to join. For more details on that, check the documentation in the lmhosts.sam file. If you don't know where to find the file, do a search on it in the system directory of the server you are trying to join to the domain.

Also, try connecting directly to the IP address of the server. If this works, you can continue to troubleshoot the name resolution problem you're obviously having (DNS, HOSTS, etc.).

make sure the DNS is pointing to a local DNS server, which contains a SRV record so it can locate the DC from the domain...
