Hi all.

I have installed a new SBS 2003 as our PDC. all the pc have joined it fine except one. it was a new pc running XP pro. everytime i try and join the domain it comes back with the responce can
The following error occured attempting to join domain "my domain"
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation

it also show the computer name in server manager with a red X in it.

i have deleted the computer name also tryed giving the computer a different name but the message came back saying this computer used to be office1 when i tryed to join the domain again.

nslookup comes back fine

any help would be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

So let's do the following:

1. Make sure the XP workstation has the SBS server IP as its DNS server.

2. Make sure the XP workstation says that it's in a workgroup.

3. Delete any references to that computer's name in the domain computer list.

3. Log on to the workstation as the local admin, open up a webbrowser and connect to " and go through the wizard. That should join you to the domain. You don't have to set up a computer account in the domain beforehand. If you get errors doing that, let us know what they are.

As Dave has specified, I would bet the problem is that the DNS settings are wrong on that machine. Make sure that the only DNS listed on the PC NIC TCP/IP properties is the IP of the SBS machine.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Hi all

Here are a few other changes i have made since last post.

Have turned the dhcp off on router and enabled dhcp on the server.

have set the pc with a static ip address and static dns ip address pointing to the server.

Can now use the http//server/connectcomputer
get to put the administrator user name and password in but then get a error message saying

"the list of users and computers cannot be found before you continue ensure that the client computer has a wired network connection also if you have a router performing the dhcp services on your network verify that the router is configured to use the computer runing windows sbs as the primary dns server. for more information about router configuration settings see appendix c of getting started at
any ideas

Many Thanks

When it asks for administrator name and password, put the admin name in like this: domainname\username

For "domainname" leave the extension (.com, .local, etc) off, so you'd say "mycompany\administrator" and not "mycompany.com\administrator"

Also, your client should ONLY have the SBS server IP listed for its DNS address. Don't list another IP in addition to the SBS server IP. This is probably where you are having a problem.
