Got a new computer for Christmas. It came with Windows XP. When I attempted to install SQL Server 7, I got the following error message:

"The standard edition server component cannot be installed on Windows NT workstation using this CD. Only client components will be available for installation."

Looking at the manufacturers order site, the description of both Windows XP Home and Professional editions describes them in terms that indicate to me that XP is descended from Windows 2000 (which did not give me that error message when installing SQL Server 7).

Is there something in Windows XP that has to be set in order to be able to fully load SQL Server 7?

on my laptop i'm running a windows xp, VS.NET, and sql2k server. but the sql2k server is the personal ed. you can not install the reg ed (that you have) on xp. It will only install on the server OS. I don't know much about the past ones because i have never used them.

hope that helps. --------------

I have the standard version running on a laptop which is using Windows 2000 and it loaded fine (like it does on NT) I'd be satisfied with that except that the laptop is old and only has 65 meg of ram so it runs like a slug and it gets a little quirky sometimes.

I had been hoping that the new computer would solve my problems, but it's been a real bear by itself. I tried to solve the problem by doing a dual boot system and after much hair tearing, SQL Server loads on 2000 like it does on XP; XP seems to be the master system and is controling much of what happens in 2000.

Which edition of Windows 2000 are you running? I don't believe that you've loaded SQL Server Standard Edition on Windows 2000 Professional. According to Microsoft, these editions can only be loaded on Windows Server OS. The developer and desktop editions can be loaded on a Non-Server OS. If the PC is running Windows 2000 Server, then SQL Server Standard or Enterprise Editions could be loaded.

Terry, I would agree, though in my case from experience rather than ms sheets. My attempts to install MS SQLServer 2000 enterprise on a 2000 pro box gave the same results as the original poster, basically the "Install SQL Server" link on the autorun is disabled and you get a similar notice.
Just thought I would provide a little experienced, "I screwed it up like that a couple times" commentary :)

Thanks for the help everyone. It's been a while since I installed it on the laptop and I thought it was the standard version that I installed. I tried the desktop verison with XP and it went in fine.

Best wishes for the new year!
