Hi there,

I've setup several printers already but there are a few that I cannot find them. Pinging the IP address does not sucessfully complete.

I have two servers for printing purposes. The other one works great. This confirms that the printer has a valid IP address and it is operational. I've matched the configuration on both server and can't seem to find the difference.

What could be wrong?

Thanks

Do you mean that you can't find the IP address of those printers ?
Are they using a built-in NIC ? Or an external print server box ? Peter Van Eeckhoutte

Peter,

The printer is HP4000 with (I've installed the cards) I guess built-in Nic. I can install this printer fine from another Printer server but not the other one.

From serve A, I cannot find the printer (can't ping the printer address). From server B works fine. As of now the printer is in production connected to server B. However, I need to move it to server A.

Thanks

Make sure that the following network services are installed :
Simple TCP/IP services
TCP/IP printing

Also, make sure that the TCP/IP printing service is running...

Next create a new printer, on a local port, create a new plain LPR port, point to the printer's IP address, and assign the driver to it...
It should work just fine Peter Van Eeckhoutte

Pete,

It's not. I cannot point to an IP that I cannot ping. I've double checked the ip/subnetmask/gateway of the printer. It get all these info from the DHCP fine.

Don't understand why I cannot ping these two printers. But can ping and install them from my other print server.

Thanks again

what is the IP , subnetmask & default gateway of
- your server
- your printer ?

Can you ping the other server (on which you can install the printer) from your 'problem' server ?
What is the IP address of the other server ?

ssphoenix,

I've had a lot of luck with the HP JetAdmin tool, available for download from HP. It hooks up with the MAC address rather than the IP address.

Try it out.

Andrew

ssphoenix,

The last thing I would do is to put network resources (as your netwk printer) on DHCP; after power cycling it, you'll have all bunch of troubles. Make it static, and, instead of pinging, try to telnet to its address on 9000 or 8200 ports (if i am not mistaking, this is a default port for HP jetdirect - check on their site). The Telnet client should give you no response, obviously, but should not time out, if successful. Some cards might not have ICMP configured 9unlikely, though).

BTW, can you ping from the server any other node on the same subnet where printer is?

Good luck.

Hi fellows,

Thanks for trying to help me out. I still have not been able to figure it out. We are a hotel business. I have about 400 workstation and approximately 150 printers. (lazy bums around here :)) Static IP is not an option that I'd like to pursue. Telneting I believe still uses IP so no go there.

The two printers in questions are setup and working properly on my second print server. Of course I could leave them there. However, I have to move them to a new print server.

From the server in question, I can ping everything around the network except these two printers only. This drives me nuts more then annoys me because it just does not make any sense.

Thanks

Can you ping printers at all - from the "working" server? If not, this is my point: the ICMP (ping) protocol is not activated on the JetDirect card; in this case, only telnetting will show the connectivity. Those are different parts of the TCP/IP stack.

Thanks but no go there either. I can telnet into the card from any other station/servers but the one in question. ICMP is enabled.

I'm almost positive that there is something wrong with the server although other then this incident, has been flawless so far.

Thanks...
