Can't install MS SQL 2005 Express - The SQL Server service failed to s

When I try to install MS SQL 2005 Express, I get this error:

It then rolls back the installation.

I have tried removing SQL and any Reg items I could find, as well as doing it in Windows Selective Startup mode ... all with the same result

I did previously have it installed on this system and it was uninstalled... now cannot be reinstalled.

System is Vista sp1

One person I spoke to at Micro$oft said to renstall Windows... nice!
