I installed MSDE 2 from the Visual Studio .NET Professional kit and the Client Tools from a SQL Server 2000 Evaluation cdrom. Got me Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer at an afordable price and no time-outs. However, I've just come to training material on Full-Text Search and observed that I don’t have the service installed.
1. I went back to the MSDE 2 setup and tried to run it. It balked, saying the instance name was invalid. The instance name: “VSdotNET” is canned in the setup.ini file, so my interpretation is that I can’t easily change or add to the installation through that route.
2. I went back to the SQL Server 2000 install cdrom and reran that, selecting the Database server /Add components or modify options. I got a page for specifying the installation to be modified. I unchecked the “default” option box, but the text box for the instance name did not open up for text input. My interpretation of that is that this installation kit does not recognize the MSDE 2 as something it can add to or modify.
Does anyone know if Full-Text Search Service is available for MSDE 2 and how to get it?
P.S. Also posted on SQL Service forum.
