Can't Install Client For Microsoft Networks

When I open the Local Area Connection Properties for my NIC, and click Install->Client->"Client for Microsoft Networks", I receive the error "Could not add the requested component. The error is: The system cannot find the file specified."

I have the Windows 2000 CD in the CD-ROM drive, but the drive never activates during this process, so the system is apparently looking for the needed file(s) on the HD only.

Can anyone tell me the names of the files needed to install Client for Microsoft Networking, and which directory they need to be placed in on the HD, so that I can try to extract the files from the CD and place them where they need to be? The bottom line is that when I try to perform the install of Client for Microsoft Networks, I don't know what files the system is looking for, or where it is looking. The error message does not provide this information, nor am I given an option to specify a filename or browse for a file.

Thanks

start-run-regedit. go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

what is the value for SourcePath? Thats where it would look for the setup files from.

however i suspect that wont work for this problem, as it would usually open a box stating the file it couldnt find and then shows you the path it was expecing the file from.

you may have to reinstall windows on top of itself to correct this, because part of the windows install may be corrupted somehow.

You need to download snetcfg.exe:
You need to pass the command twice:

Win2k with Service Pack >= 2:
snetcfg.exe -v -u MS_Server
snetcfg.exe -v -c s -i MS_Server

Win2k with Service Pack < 2:
snetcfg.exe -v -u MS_Server
snetcfg.exe -v -l %windir%\Inf\NETSERV.INF -c s -i MS_Server

I downloaded snetcfg.exe and tried executing the commands listed above. The first command was successful, but when trying to run the second command, I receive the message "Trying to install MS_Server.....failed. Error code: 0x8007007b.

I looked up that error code in the MS Knowledge Base, but the only reference to it was in a single article that pertained to SQL Server 2000, which isn't installed on this computer.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Try:
snetcfg -v -l %systemroot%\inf\sysoc.inf -c s -i MS_Server

Here is an update on where I stand with this issue.

I tried the command given in the most recent post above, and while it was successful, I still received the same file error when I tried to install Client for Microsoft Networks.

I then checked the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath and found that it was set to D:\I386. As I mentioned previously, though, whenever I would try to install Client for MS Networks, the system never attempted to access the CD-ROM drive. Therefore, I copied the entire contents of the I386 directory from the CD to my HD, and changed the value of the SourcePath registry entry to "C:\I386".

Now when I try to install Client for Microsoft Networks, I receive two error messages. One is the same error I've been receiving all along - "Could not add the requested component. The error is: The system cannot find the file specified."

The second (new) error message is being generated by the file gcasServAlert.exe and reads "The procedure entry point SetEnvironmentVariableA could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll". I am preparing to research that error message, but if anyone has any additional suggestions in the meantime, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Adding an additional point of confusion to this situation, here is what the Microsoft Knowledge Base has to say about the "Procedure Entry Point" error described above:

"The application is misinterpreting the operating system version and is trying to call a procedure in the Windows 95 or Windows 98 version of the Dynamic Link Library (DLL) that is unavailable in Windows NT version 4.0 or Windows 2000." It goes on to say that the solution to the problem is to contact the vendor of the software that is generating the error to obtain an updated version that runs under WinNT or 2000. This does not make a lot of sense in my situation, however, since the error occurs when I am trying to install an actual Windows 2000 networking component.

Also note that I had reformatted the system's HD and installed a fresh copy Windows 2000 just before the problem being discussed in this thread started, so there are no left-over pieces of any previous version of Windows on the system.

The second (new) error message is being generated by the file gcasServAlert.exe and reads "The procedure entry point SetEnvironmentVariableA could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"."

This is from the Microsoft Beta antispyware product, and should not matter. But it would be worthwhile disabling this product and then attempting the install again of your networking components.
