Can't get word to insert more than one subdocument

So within the "outline" view, normally with a fresh new document, I can insert many subdocuments into one master document.

For some reason, it won't let me do this anymore.
Here's the setup:
- Master Document has a locked word file as the template. (by this I mean that the template file is written and protected with administrator priviledges and the master document uses this as a template)
- Text and report is inserted (written)
- Attachments are included in a subdocument

Finally an appendix is supposed to be attached as a subdocument as well. This is the part that doesn't work. All the buttons for manipulating subdocuments are blanked out and I can't see any reason why.

Does anybody know what is going on?

thanks in advance!

Wish I could help, but I gave up on using Word master / sub documents versions ago. It is quirky and unreliable. If I need mulitple documents to merge together, I use bookmarks and VBA. Good luck, I hope you get an answer.

Thanks for the reply:
It's a compromise for me. I'm dealing with documents with large quantities of graphics and reports. I tend to keep these graphics in the appendices and attachments so that when I'm working on content, I don't need to have a 4-6MB open in word. Stability becomes an issue with these documents so I needed to find another solution. Hence, subdocuments/master was what we chose.

So now I can work on my attachments completely separately from content etc. Then when I print, I just expand the subdocs. and go at it...(of which there are problems with this anyway).

From what I gather, the method of using bookmarks and VBA involves creating a single large file at time of printing?

Yes, usually. It depends on how complex the Table of Contents may be, but yes, usually. When printing large documents, because I don't want to hog the print queue, I sequentially print chunks of the document, rather than the whole thing at once.
