Have just bought a new Lacie d2 Hard Drive Extreme to go with my new Mac. But first I want to transfer my old files from my old PC laptop which runs windows ME.

How do I install the Lacie? The PC knows the hardwear is connected (via USB), but is looking for a driver.

No relevant driver came with the Lacie so I've tried downloading Silver Lining 98 and installed it, but the PC doesn't seem to recognise it as a driver.

I also need to do the same thing on my PC at home which runs Windows 98. I assume once I solve the problem on my Laptop, then the same solution will work on my home computer?

Any suggestions greatfully received.

ME shouldn't require drivers, 98 would though.
Can you connect the drive to a Windows 2k or XP machine?
Has the drive been formated?

If you read the system requirements on the product page, ME is not mentioned (just 2k & XP for windows) -
Could you network you ME & 98 machines to a 2k/XP machine (which presumably will see the drive)?

Note - doesn't the drive need to be partitioned/formatted differently for MAC than PC? (I know nothing about MACs - but they don't use fat32 or ntfs filestore). So you'd really need to network the ME & 98 machines to the MAC?
Or - could you burn the necessary files to CD/DVD?

MAC's use a different format than PC's, no doubt about it. Newer MAC OS's (OS X) can format the drive to FAT32. That'll at least make the partitions compatible for Windows. Other option is to try to partition and format the drive with ME.

Back up any MAC data on the drive first.

I've just bought a Lacie d2 extreme with triple interface.
- Only to find out that the 'compatible systems' are only Mac, W2k and XP. I have 98SE !. This disk comes preformatted as a mac disk. My system doesn't see it when using Firewire or USB2 i/f. Lacie suppoort on this is poor. However the disk comes with a trial version of software called Macdrive - which allows a windows system to use the disk 'as a mac disk'.

It is early days, however I am able to use the disk, using Macdrive and 98SE, and firewire (haven't tried USB2 yet). However lacie only provide Macdrive trial software. I have to pay to upgrade to the full version. Plus I will need a copy installed on each windows Pc that i will be connecting the drive to. So not a great solution. However, if you have a firewire port on your disk/pc perhaps you should get this Macdrive software? They do a free trial from the web site so maybe if you just want to port your stuff across you can get it all done using the free trial version?
