Hi, i'm trying to set up a 9611 phone with the VPN option. i changed the 46xxsettings.txt file to the following:

IF $GROUP SEQ 1 GOTO GROUP_1
IF $GROUP SEQ 2 GOTO GROUP_2
IF $GROUP SEQ 3 GOTO GROUP_3
IF $GROUP SEQ 4 GOTO GROUP_4
IF $GROUP SEQ 5 GOTO GROUP_5
IF $GROUP SEQ 876 GOTO GROUP_REMOTE
GOTO END

##############################################################
# GROUP_1
########## Add SET Statements for GROUP 1 below ############

################ END OF GROUP 1 SETTINGS #####################
GOTO END

##############################################################
# GROUP_2
########## Add SET Statements for GROUP 2 below ############

################ END OF GROUP 2 SETTINGS #####################
GOTO END

##############################################################
# GROUP_3
########## Add SET Statements for GROUP 3 below ############

################ END OF GROUP 3 SETTINGS #####################
GOTO END

##############################################################
# GROUP_4
########## Add SET Statements for GROUP 4 below ############

################ END OF GROUP 4 SETTINGS #####################
GOTO END

##############################################################
# GROUP_5
########## Add SET Statements for GROUP 5 below ############

################ END OF GROUP 5 SETTINGS #####################
GOTO END

##############################################################
#GROUP_REMOTE
##############################################################
SET VPNPROC 2
SET NVVPNDMODE 1
SET NVVPNCFGPROF 3
SET VPNCODE 876
################ END OF GROUP GROUP_REMOTE SETTINGS ##########

GOTO END

##############################################################
# END
############## END OF CONFIGURATION FILE #####################

in addition to this, the phone has 876 as the IP phone group ID on page 3 of the station admin page. so not sure why i don't get the VPN option when i go into the Menu on the phone. please help.

I'm really unsure about how that group ID field in the station form applies to phones. The first time the phone boots, it finishes processing the 46xxsettings file before registering to CM. Docs say the phone needs to be rebooted after registering to CM the first time - which makes sense to me.

And because setting up VPN phones is tricky, I would guess that if you couldn't get it all to go in one shot from the settings file that the phone would just register to CM normally and not leave you in VPN configuration limbo on the set and instead just ignore anything related to VPN and register normally.

Hey Voice99 -- try just making the only line in #GROUP_REMOTE " SET NVVPNMODE 1" and then CLEAR the phone, reboot, * to program and set GROUP to 876, exit exit (should reboot again) and then wait. Then confirm the 46xxsettings.txt was downloaded, then reboot one mo' 'gain. Press * to program, check to see if VPN shows in the CRAFT menu.

Also, are you using the latest firmware? or something else?

tried that, no luck. changed 46xxsettings.txt file, cleared phone, had it reboot, same issue. then restarted the phone, stopped boot process to enter Craft menu, no luck.

how do i check the firmware? the phone tells me it's Release 6.3037U. i know the CM is at release 6.3. Does this mean the firmware is also 6.3?

6.3037U translates to H.323 6.3.0 software. The latest version is H.323 6.4.0 available at support.avaya.com.

Voice99 -- there is your problem. You are running the "U" release which means it does not support any encryption. Change the firmware out with the standard firmware and VPN should then show up.

where do i get the standard firmware?

why can't i download the 6.3.x firmware instead? i only ask because our CM is running 6.3 right now. does it even matter if the phone firmware is newer than the PBX software?

There is no correspondence between the release numbering of Deskphone software and the release numbering of CM software.

Generally speaking, you want to run the latest software which has been deemed as compatible with your CM. If you look at the ReadMe file, you will see that H.323 6.4 is supported on your CM.

Thanks to all for your feedback.. Since this is the first time I've done this, I still have some questions. Now that I downloaded the new firmware, which one goes on the server, the TAR file or the ZIP file? And does this get loaded on the Utility server or somewhere else?

All the contents of the ZIP file you downloaded should be extracted to your phones file server root. This includes the 96x1upgrade and various tar files. If it includes a 46xxsettings.txt be sure not to overwrite it.
