I keep following the instructions, and when it tells me Slackware is loaded and I need to reboot, all I get is grub> (followed by a flashing cursor). I hit Tab or type help, but none of the options work.

I was told Slackware would get my hands dirty (and help me learn Linux), but this is downright frustrating...

Slackare installs Lilo by default so that should not occur.
Or have you installed Grub after your install was completed?
If not, then you have Grub from an another Linux distro on your Master Boot Record.

When the installer is at the end, it goes through a few screens to configure Lilo with Slackware (and Windows if you have it on any of your partitions)

It should have also prompted where you want to install to, (Floppy, Master Boot Record(MBR) etc)

You can boot from CD1 and choose INSTALL from the setup menu.
That should re-do the Lilo section.

This ended up being a hardware problem. I added another 256M RAM card to my PC right before I attempted to load Slackware, and it was causing RAM errors.

I pulled both 256M RAM cards, put one 512M card in the good slot, and nothing in the bad one. Then I loaded Slackware, and now it works / boots just fine (using it now).

You were right, I had Red Hat loaded on that PC previously, which I know uses GRUB to boot.
