I first posted this in forum1584, but this is more of an XP/IE7 issue...

I'm trying to connect from a new notebook (XP SP3) to an SBS 2003 server via Remote Web Workplace, which on a new machine, involves being prompted to install the Remote Desktop ActiveX Control.

When I get to the point where it should ask to install the ActiveX control, I get a somewhat generic message saying "This portion of the Remote Web Workplace requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control. Your browser's security settings may be preventing you from downloading ActiveX controls. Adjust these settings...", but I am never given the option to install it.

I know that XP SP3 disables the Remote Desktop add-on, but it only disables it if it's present... and it's not present when I look in Add-On Manager.

I tried adding the domain to Trusted Sites > Sites (I added but this had no effect. I also went to Internet Security Settings, reset the settings to "Medium", and verified that both "Download signed ActiveX Controls" and "Download unsigned ActiveX Controls" are both set to "Prompt". Closed IE (rebooted actually), and no change.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get this ActiveX control installed???

Anything like this?

"In IE7, Tools > Internet Options> Programs> Manage add-ons.

Look for ‘Microsoft Terminal Services Client Control (redist)’ and make sure is set to ‘Enabled’."

Remote Web Workplace and IE7 ActiveX error

linney,

I've run into the add-on being disabled before, after installing SP3... but in this case, it's a new machine and the add-on is not even present.

I'm pretty sure I tried all the suggestions in the links, but this weekend I am going to double-check, including disabling Windows Firewall (have no AV installed yet) and post my results.

I thought that RDP version 6.1 was included in SP3 and that is is the only available download for it. I don't think it is available as a single download. Maybe you are seeing a SP3 type bug and reverting back to SP2 might be a solution?

A couple of these threads talks about Graphic Cards (Nvidia and ATI) causing problems. Clutching at straws time I'm afraid.

Thanks for the help, linney. I had some time this afternoon, so I double-checked everything.

Remote Web Workplace doesn't use "Remote Desktop Connection" (that you get to from Programs > Accessories). It uses an ActiveX control that basically lets Remote Desktop run through Internet Explorer.

RWW requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control, which shows up as 'Microsoft Terminal Services Client Control (redist)' in Add-ons. I've had trouble with this before, and one of the following methods has always solved the problems in the past:

1. Spybot screwed up one update years ago (1.4), and mistakenly "immunized" against this ActiveX control; you had to delete the registry key below to fix this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{7584C670-2274-4EFB-B00B-D6AABA6D3850}

2. If IE security settings are too high, you cannot install this (or any other) ActiveX control.

3. After installing SP3 on a machine that already has this ActiveX control installed, you may find it to be disabled... go to Manage Add-ons to enable it.

None of these apply, or are working for me in this situation. One google link here shows people with the same problem as me, but no fix yet.

I also disabled Windows Firewall, and there is no AV installed yet. This notebook came with SP3 preinstalled, so I doubt I can roll back to a previous SP. I would be more inclined to uninstall IE7 and see if I have any luck with IE6. Also, I could probably work around this problem by manually installing/registering the ActiveX control, but I'm interested in a real fix for this, as I have a lot of clients trying to tie into the office from other people's computers, and I won't be able to talk them through manually installing/registering an ActiveX control!

I will keep searching!

Try Internet Options/Security and lower it to medium from its default medium High and then try installing the active X

Branching out from your link lead me to these, I have posted them in case you missed them, or they help someone else following this thread.

linney comes through again! :)

Your suggestion about "Also delete extension GUID {9059f30f-4eb1-4bd2-9fdc-36f43a218f4a}" got me looking at this link:

They first suggest deleting {7584c670-2274-4efb-b00b-d6aaba6d3850} from HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings

rather than from HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility, as I had done in the past.

and that worked! I'm still not happy about this fix, as I'm not going to be able to talk my coworkers through registry hacks on other people's computers... but now I understand (sort of) what was causing the behavior. Many thanks!

tlcscousin:
The behavior I was experiencing occurred even when I set the security settings to "Medium", and manually tweaked a few other settings from Disable to Prompt.
