Can't get past start page win xp

My computer will boot up but on reaching start page it comes up for a few seconds then the screen goes stripey
If I log on to my sons account then open mine it is okay?

Have you tried a System Restore, selecting a restore point to before the problem?

Your Profile may be corrupted?

Try running the Disk Cleanup program.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.
