can't get out of single user mode 1

I'm having a bad day and can't think straight wth 2 servers down. I've just had to reinstall SQL server 6.5 on an NT4 server and it keeps starting up in single user mode after stopping and restarting the Server and Executive services.
I know I'm probably missing something obvious ..please help

This work on 7 and 2k, hope its the same on 6.5

sp_dboption 'databasename','single user','false'
