hello folks, been trying to get rid of lop.com invasion for the last day and a bit,Windows ME machine, and I think I might have succeeded after clearing out some .exe files from application data.

I don't know for sure as I have now lost connection to the web. I regained it briefly but since then nothing I have done has worked.

I tried winsock fix
I reinstalled the network card
I took off and then put back on the protocols ( tcp/ip and netbuie), services and client.
I reinstalled the OS over the top and then upgraded it to IE6 again

can you advise on what else to do please?

(clean install not an option)

Check to ensure TCP/IP is running properly. From a command prompt:

ping 127.0.0.1

you should get 4 replies with something like
"reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes = 32 time < 10ms TTL=128"

If you don't get this, it means that TCP/IP is screwed up on the system.
Next is to ping a machine via name, this will tell you if DNS resolution and routing are working correctly:

eg ping You should get similar response to above, if it can't connect then again, its something wrong with tcp/ip settings.

If these are OK, post a HijackThis log and let me know, because it sounds like there must be something running to reload lop.com

hello John, nice to speak with you again.

I tried ipconfig / all from this machine and received details only on the machine I was using, I removed and replaced all protocols, services, clients and the card driver on the non-communicating machine (but not necessarily in that order) shut down, booted up,got new ip addresses, all those sorts of things, and got no-where, and was wondering what else to try and wandered back in to the computer room to see if I could see it on the network, without really expecting to - and there it was! Dunno what I did that changed the situation, but whey-hey!

I kept the machine on for some hours and received no more undesirable icons or saw any more toolbars on the browser, so I reckon the lop stuff is gone at last. GOOD!

If it comes in again ( this is the second time), and I find lop.com on it I have advised the folk it lives with that I shall probably opt for a reformat and fresh install.

thank you for your help, best wishes for 2005

Gracie :)
