I have a user that installed adaware and now he can't get on the internet. When he types an address in a page gets returned that says can't find DNS server and when I try to ping any website I get an host not known. The DNS servers are fine and all other users are able to access the internet. This user can also access any other network resources and all domain controllers. This problem only started occuring after installing adaware. This user did uninstall adaware after he found he couldn't access the internet and this didn't resolve the problem. I also ran a full system virus scan with updated virus definitions and it was clean. What might be causing this?

What happens if you try to ping an external server by IP address? Try:
ping 4.2.2.1
If that works, you have DNS issues.
If it fails, you may have default gateway issues (assuming you can indeed connect to internal network computers).
You should post a Hijack This log as well, to verify the integrity of the system. Ad-aware usually doesn't cause these types of issues, however, sometimes removing items (such as the new.net domains) can cause your network settings to fail.

If the user is using Windows XP, try using the tool from this site.
Sometimes Adware/Spyware attach themselves to LSPs and when running a spyware removal tool that removes the spyware that may be attached to LSPs it can break your winsock.
If the user is running Windows ME or Windows 98 you can try

The winsock XP fix works fine on Win2k.

I ran the winsockxpfix program and it worked like a charm!! Now my user can get on the internet with no problems. Thanks for all of your help.
