We have a network of windows 98 pc's, the server is running Windows 2000 server with MS small business server and MS exchange. Now, MS programs like internet explorer and outlook can access the internet fine, but when i try using a non-ms program like mozilla or netscape I get a 403 error. I've tried copying the settings that are in internet explorer, but it hasn't done any good. I've tried running mozilla on the server and it works fine.

I know i'm missing something fairly obvious, but my training won't get to servers for a good few months yet

any clues?

Are you using a proxy server. And if so, is it using some kind of authentication?

only the server has a direct connection to the internet, all the other pcs are connected directly to it.
as for authentication? ISA? I'm guessing that because it's an ms server it automatically allows ms apps, but as the ones who set the darn thing up are sunning themselves in barbados I can't check

ISA Server does automatically authenticate your connection. But it should pop up with a logon dialog for Netscape or Mozilla.
Microsoft ISA Server offers four options for authentication: Basic, Digest, Integrated, and Client Certificate. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and above supports all of the authentication methods, while other Web browsers may support only the Basic authentication method. Websense offers transparent Identification and Basic authentication, which is supported by all browers.

When Basic and NTLM or Integrated authentication are enabled, Microsoft ISA Server prompts users to authenticate each time they open a browser other than a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser (which authenticates transparently). This allows ISA Server to obtain user identification, regardless of the browser, which then allows Websense to filter based on individual user and group policies.

For Netscape or other browsers to filter based on individual users and groups, Basic authentication must be enabled. Therefore, if your environment includes both Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers, enable both Basic and Integrated Windows authentication.
