I am trying to use my COM1 serial port to console in to a network device. I log into root, enter minicom -s, then set Serial Device as /dev/ttyS0 (all other settings are known correct). Then I initialize minicom, and nothing happens. I know I am doing this properly, as it used to work fine when I had Ubuntu.

I did cat /proc/interrupts and no entries were shown for IRQ3 or IRQ4, which are supposed to be /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS1. Do I need to mount or activate the serial ports? Or does the 2.4.33.3 kernel not recognize them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Never mind. Got it working. Someone suggested that I log in as root and enter:

chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.serial

which I did. Then I started minicom, but this time I set the Serial Device to /dev/ttyS1 (instead of /dev/ttyS0) and it started working. I can now use minicom on my Slackware PC to program network devices via my COM1 serial port.

Hope this helps someone else in the future...
