Hi I put a new harddrive in my computer and now need to put a operating system on it but both my cd rom drive and dvdburner drive won't open please help.thanks Bob

Is there power to the drives? A good drive should open any time power is applied. Did you try with the IDE cables unplugged, just to test power? What does happen when you push the "on" button? Need details before guessing!

Hi mick

yes the doors open and closed and the light comes on and off but it won't read the cd windows xp full version. And for some reason my drive A won't work either. It boots and sees the harddrive but thats it.Bob

For your floppy, check bios to make sure its enabled, and also you want to check your bootup order. I imagine you want the cdrom as first boot option.
Also, while in the bios, you can check and see if your bios recognizes the cdrom.
Is it slave or master, check your jumper settings.

Also, if the floppy drive light stays on all the time it means the power connector is installed upside down.

Thanks every one got everything working great now. Thanks Bob

Correction for garebo:
I think he meant that the IDE cable may be upside down - if the power is upside down....the drive may smoke! (never done this myself - read about it in a book!) <grin>

By the way, what was the problem? We like to know to help others in the future.

I meant the connector for the floppy. If its installed upside down the floppy light stays on.
