Im in the middle of building and adding a new server into one of our domains as a dc. When i configure the active directory so it can join as a dc i get operation failed.

Failed finding a suitable domain controller for the domain newdom.local.

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

This is strange as I logged into the domain and the servers name is labnew.newdom.local.

I can ping the other dc.

Any ideas would be great :D

make sure the DNS is working before you try to run dcpromo. The new server has to be able to contact a DNS server to find the SRV records so it can find a domain controller...

I added a host record to the dns but this still did not work. I had to add the dns ip to the dns listings as I only put in our isp's dns servers :/

I used netdiag /debug (found as a support tool on the windows 2000 server cd) to see if the server could find the dns server. This helped point me fix my mistake.

Thanks your yr post peter, I see many of your responses keep up the good work.
