A laptop running Windows 2000 Professional. When I try to join it to my small domain with a single Windows 2000 server, both the network id wizard and changing network id properties report can't find the network path. However I can ping the server from the laptop and map a network drive to the server.

The server is running Active Directory. There have been no problems with joining other workstations.

Any suggestion gratefully received

I would double-check all iP settings on a laptop and re-boot it. Make sure everything is set to "Automatic setting" and DHCP client service is running. (that in case of DHCP driven network)the other way would be to create the computer account for the laptop in DC first and try again.
Good Luck.
