Hi all,

I am getting this error when I getting the error
"Can't find master for map "passwd". Reason: No such map in server's domain"
when I tried to change password on NIS server with
$ yppasswd
nickname file /var/yp/nicknames does not exist. Can't find master for map "passwd". Reason: No such map in server's domain
Sorry. You can't change your password here.
Please log in to the NIS master,
using SSH and change your password there instead.

If you wish to change the password of a local account, use
passwd.real instead.

my ypwhich -m shows
ethers.byaddr kaveri
ethers.byname kaveri
hosts.byaddr kaveri
hosts.byname kaveri
group.bygid kaveri
group.byname kaveri
passwd.byname kaveri
ypservers kaveri
passwd.byuid kaveri

Am I missing something basically master.password file. This file is not present in /var/yp or any dir under this diretory?

Any idea?

I addition to this, I am using Debian 2.4.19 as NIS server.

Make sure that /var/yp/nicknames exists. If it does exist make sure that this line exists:

passwd passwd.byname

If it does not exists then create the nicknames file

passwd passwd.byname
group group.byname
networks networks.byaddr
hosts hosts.byname
protocols protocols.bynumber
services services.byname
aliases mail.aliases
ethers ethers.byname

Secondly make sure that the you can talk to the nis server for the passwd:

ypcat -k passwd

if that fails make sure that you are binded to the correct domain and your nisdomain name is correct.

type nisdomainname and make sure that it matchs your nisdomain
next make sure that ypbind is correct and ruuning.
more /etc/yp.conf
service ypbind status

Try all of those and see if it helps.
