Fellows,

Strange thing. Cannot find who took one of my IP addresses. It's not on the DHCP scope so I cannot use DHCP. When I look at the Wins, it totaly skips this address. When I ping -a, it gives a valid response.
I've tried several freeware sniffers and just can't seem to find it.

Thanks

Maybe you excluded it a long time ago and forgot about it??

Or, for some reason it's cached in someone (somethings) arp table, and it won't release it. But continues to renew.

Do you have 10 users or 1000 users? If closer to 10, you could stop by each pc and run a winipcfg. If the missing IP isn't showing on a users system, that would at least point you towards the printers/scanners or other network devices.

Thanks for reply,

Don't use exclusion and I know it's not cached in table.

I have over 400 users and going around is my last option.

This is a valid IP because I found out, apparently this user has the most bandwidth used for Internet traffic. The firewall again does not give me anything but the IP address.

DHCP and WINS tells me that this address does not exist. I wish I could just kill the address and get the call to find out who it is but strangely both utils are oblivious to this.

I can also setup a PC with a static IP to purposely conflict his/her IP but I'd like to know first why the WINS does not register this IP.

Thanks

Any other utils that I don't know about might help me?

The only reason I can think of for WINS not recognising it is that its on a different sub-net, but that wouldn't explain why the firewall can "see" it...????...or how u can ping the address....????!!!

Without knowing about your network, the only way I can think of to track the PC is to disconnect each wiring centre or segment in turn and use ping to find out if the PC is on that segment....????

Yeah, the WINS thing is weird............!!!

I have a NT4.0 IIS server and it has two Network cards one Network card has a static IP address. I need to connect the second nic card to the network. I donot want DHCP to give it a IP address I want give it a static IP address will it alow me to do this if so what steps should i take.
