Cant find installation directory

i installed mysql using an rpm for the client and server but i cant find where everything is installed to

in the documentation it keeps telling me to go to the installation directory and go to the scripts folder and run various scripts

i did a file search and i cant find it.
Im running mandrake linux 9.1

I can run mysql from the shell but i cant get php to work with it

Im also running apache if that makes any difference

all the docs for mysql keep refering to files and scripts that i cant find anywhere on my system

Ive tried installing and uninstalling the rpm many times both from shell and my mandrake cd's

please help me
