Can't find file after compact and repair

We have a peer to peer network with the backend mdb file on a computer running windows xp home edition and access 2000.
After doing a compact and repair I get an error microsoft access can't find the file. I can open the file on the computer where the back end is stored. Did not have this problem when using windows 98. Some advice would be appreciated.
