We run a single DC. I cannot see the PC's in my network places. I can see the servers and myself but noone else.

If you click on "View Workgroup Computers" in the pane to the left can you see them?

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

There is no view workgroup computers option. I can access them through \\%computername% in run, but i can't view them.

On the pane to the left? Under Network Tasks? Do you even have a left pane?

My Network Places is nothing more than a helpful location for centralized viewing of Network Resources in Windows XP. It does not necessarily have to contain every single device attached to the network. It is populated by Windows with devices you commonly access. And can just as easily be empty.

Turn off WINS on your DC and PC's and that should do the trick. You only need WINS if you are using pre-2000 machines.

It doesnt have a veiw workgroup computers on it. What will happen to the PC's that run 98? We have like two of them.

Do you have a "Entire Network" Option under "Other Places"?
If so click it. You should then at least see your domain name. Double click it and you should get all the PC's in the network.

Turning Off WINS will not make Windows populate the Network Places folder. If he can access the computers via \%computername%, then the Network is fine. WINS has nothing to do with it.

That is were I cant find them is after I double click on our domain. The only things on there are servers and me. I can't see the rest of the PC's. The reason this is such a big deal is I can't see what PC's are there and I can't manage them. i use Cain and Abel once in a while to do some administrative things and no PC's will show up in the domain besides mine. Once in a great while they will show up, then their gone again.

Ohh o.k. Is it only your machine that exhibits this problem? Or do other's have it also? If many computers exhibit the problem, then its probably due to a slow Browse Master Issue.

The Microsoft networking browser system consists of a master browser, backup browsers, and client computers. The Windows browse service maintains a list, called the browse list, of computers with resources (servers--a client computer can also be a server in a peer-to-peer network) in a workgroup. One computer, the Browse Master, maintains the browse list.

This Browse master maybe taking too long to serve up the List for the client PC's, such that Windows does not populate the Workgroup. You need to figure out which machine is taking over Browse Master duties and check for any irregularities.

I'll beg to differ on that. WINS has always given problems with browsing on newer networks. If you do a search in the 2003 forum you'll see several posts on this very issue and turning off WINS should work. We had the EXACT problem on the network I manage, since our network was upgraded from NT to 2000 then to 2003 we had WINS configured. It was suggested to me to turn off WINS, when we turned it off, suddenly everything works.

Since he is on a domain and not a workgroup I stick by my suggestion. Besides, WINS sucks and if they aren't running anything pre-2k it is pretty much useless anyway since 2k, 2003 and XP don't use it.

If you turn off WINS the 98 machines will not be able to browse network machines. You are in a catch 22 situation, 2k, 2003 and XP don't use WINS and have trouble browsing with it turned on and NT/98/ME only use WINS to browse the network and have trouble with it turned off. I haven't run into anyone using 98 in so long I couldn't tell you how to make it work for the entire network. But I can tell you, if you are on an XP machine, WINS will give you problems with the network PCs showing up sometimes and disappearing others.

Oh, I forgot to say that if you turn of WINS, Win98 machines wont be able to browse but you should still be able to UNC and map drives, and the same with XP machines if you leave WINS turned on you can map and UNC to the other machines.

Might be a good time to upgrade those two 98 machines to XP. 98 isn't even supported at all by MS since June or July of last year.
