Hi, not sure whether to post this in xp or 2000 forum, here goes.
I have a win2K and a winXP connected through a switch. I have connectivity. I need to map to a share folder on Win2k from winxp. I can get as far as my documents on the win2k and then when I click on the share folder inside it says I don't have permission. I set the permissions on the share folder to everyone and all rights. Still no luck.
I opened network neighbourhood and logged into the win2k computer from the xp but still can't get past the my documents folder. I tried to move the share folder to another location and I had a violation error.
I can access the files from another windows 2k machine.
Any assistance would be much appreciated

If the folder you want to map to is below My Documents, just explicitly share it with appropriate security settings, then map to that share.

Have already done that. But still can't get below my documents.

Sorry - what you say doesn't make sense. If you've shared folder under my documents, you can map directly to it (either map network drive in explorer or via net use from commmand prompt). You don't need to go via My documents. So can you clarify what you actually have done please.

(2k treats My Documents differently, because its a personal folder, so just a top level share isn't enough to give access to whole tree).

What do you mean by a top level share? I have specifically shared the folders all the way down from user.
Folder 1 Administrator - shared to everyone
Folder 2 documents and settings - shared to everyone
Folder 3 my documents - shared to everyone
Folder 4 kristin - shared to everyone
once I get to kristin I try to open it and I get "you might not have permissions to access this folder, check with administrator".
Does that help?

See the concept of Level 3 security on the folders of a user profile:
Remember that XP takes security to a higher level than Win2k, and there are perfectly valid operations under Win2k that will fail for permissions reasons under XP.

If kristen is explicitly shared, then why do you need to navigate to it - you can access the share directly - \\machinename\sharename for kristen. If you start at a share that's higher up the heirarchy, when you get to Kristen, you are not accessing the Kristen share, but just a folder several layers down (which tree structure obviously doesn't have correct permissions to allow you access).

Levels 1, 2, and 3 folders are available only to a user who is logging on locally. Users who log on locally include a user who logs on to a Windows XP Professional-based computer from a Remote Desktop (RDP) session. The Network Share permissions for Levels 1,2 and 3 folders is Not Shared.

Under the Simple File Sharing UI, Kristen cannot have an accessible network share. You would need to disable Simple File Sharing and revert the NTFS permissions.

Thank you all, please note that I am trying to access the files on a w2k computer from xp.
Prior to changing to xp the files were being shared from this location to all other w2k computers. It appears that xp can't access anything in my documents on a w2k computer.
I understand the restrictions for xp to xp. The strange thing is I tried to move Kristin out of my docs in order to share it and I got a violation message.
I was thinking afterward that I should remove the share first?
Thank you

It is a personal profile.
Moving the allowable parts of it takes several steps, and should not be done remotely. It also requires even for the Adminstrator an assertion of ownership.

. Assert ownership

. Move Profile Folders

Thank you for the tips, I have upgraded the win2000 computer to winxp pro. I have put everything in the share folder and have no further problems.
I have only one unanswered question, before adding the xp machine we were able to share between the w2k machines without any problem. How is that? If it is all about sharing levels?
