We are trying to restore a file off of a recent backup. The ArcServ log shows no problems, but when we put the tape in to restore the file. All we see are 2 sessions with the plus signs - like they are expandable. The problem is when we click on them they just vanish!!! We went to older tapes and see that the problem goes back a couple of months. How can we correct this! What causes it? And is there any way we can restore that file without restoring the whole session?? We have tried to do a Merge/Scan - just about everything we can think of.
Thanks for you Attention
ArcServeIt for Windows NT. Advanced Edition
Version 6.61 (Build 834SP1)

If you can view the files in the Database Manager (not restore view), then do the following:

Try deleting the records out of the database, setting DoNotUseCatalogMerge, and then merge the tape. This process can take several hours to complete, but usually corrects this problem.

I don't know about 6.61, but 2000 had a bug in backup process if the db engine was down--the CAT file would not be written to properly. Mergecat was changed to accommodate this scenario.

Put in your tape, click manager then utilities. Choose merge tape. You can merge all the sessions or just 1 of them. Sometimes you'll have to close the restore window and re open it. Then your sessions will expand.

Good luck,
Debi

Still no luck!
I tried: deleteing the records, merging just one session, merging two sessions, scanning, closing the ArcServe restore window, closing ArcServe. Everything that was suggested in this thread - except using DoNotUseCatalogMerge - I can't find that option. Maybe it's in a newer version.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? How could is CA support? Do they still support ArcServe 6x

HI,

guess you are still on AS6.61 sp1..

Apply sp2a onto ARcserve 6.61 during the process it will
prompt you to upgrade your database to VLDB
Say "yes"
it will convert the current RAIMA database to VLDB

now merge the tape ...

Q: How do I do a merge without using cat files?

A: This requires making a change to your NT/2000 registry. This procedure, and the subsequent merging of database records without using your cat files should ONLY be performed if you are unable to run a normal merge job.

On your ARCserve server, run the appropriate registry editor:

When you have located the Task key perform the following procedure:

- ADD KEY with the name merge
- ADD VALUE with Value Name DonotUseCatalogmerge
- Choose REG_DWORD as the Data Type
- In the DWORD Editor enter 1 and select Binary as the Radix

************************************************************
I found this on CA web site. Where do I add this Key.
It just says - Once you have found the Task Key.
Very discriptive.

HKLM\software\CA\ARcserveit\Base\Task\Merge

If you dont have the Merge create a key

That worked great! Thanks! One more question though - I am suspecting that the reason this is happening is that the ArcServe database is damaged. Is there anyway to repair it? Or do I just wipe out the data base and start again?
I am thinking it's damaged, because under the session flags it says No Record, but under the job options we have all detailed records checked off..
Any thoughts
Thanks Again for all the help
Chris
