Hi,

I'm unable to establish a remote connection our SQL Server using Analysis Manager.

I have successfully registered a server in Enterprise Manager and connect via a VPN, but i cannot do the same with Analysis Manager.

Can anyone suggest a reason for this and a fix for this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Are you on the latest Service Pack for the client? Is the client in the same domain as the server? Do you have a valid login to the server? Are you a member of the OLAP Administrators group on the server?

Check these first, then make a note of your error message(s) and search in this forum or on the Microsoft website.

Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side because there is more manure there - original.

Unless anything has changed in the last few months You can only register an Analysis Services Server in Analysis Manager if you are in the same Domain.

The error i get is as follows:

Cannot open connection to Analysis Server 'GSY-SQL01'
Security Error [The user could not be authenticated]

I'm using WinXP SP1, the SQL Server is SQL Server 2000 SP3.

I work from home and connect to our servers via VPN. All of my Remote Desktop connections work and i have no problem connecting to the SQL Server using Enterprise Manager. My local machine is not a member of the same domain as the server, as to connect my VPN must be up and i cannot initialise the VPN until i have logged in.

At no point during the server registration or attempting to connect in AS am i prompted for a username or password, unlike Enterprise Manager.

Having looked through our Active Directory groups, there is no OLAP Admin group defined. How do i access this group, is it not a default AD group?

Hopefully i've given a little more info and someone out there can help me. Thanks for everything so far.

First of all Remember that while Analysis Services while bundeled with SQL Server is it's own application. The SQL Server service packs do not service pack Analysis Services this requires a totally seperate service pack typically named something like sql2kas, i forget offhand.

Analysis Services operate off of diffrent security models. While SQL Server will allow you to specify which security context you want to register a server under, Analysis Services gives no such option (Hopefully this is resolved in SQL 2005). Analysis Services Uses you Local System information to allow the registration of remote servers.

THe OLAP Admin group is a local server security group it is created when AS is installed.

The best work around would be to enable Terminal Services in Admin Mode which allow up to 2 simultaneous connections. This would allow you to work under your domain account privlages and allow access to Analysis Manager. I know it isn't the best way but it is the only way I know to work with AS cross domain.
