Can't edit published CE report remotely with CR 1

CR/CE10 sp3
I know you're supposed to be able to open a published CE10 report in CR10 but when trying to connect to one CE system I get a transport error and the other (we have 2) I can connect and edit but when I go to save it I get a "can't write to" memory error and CR shuts down. I've been having to delete the reports from the CEs manually, edit them on my dev server, and then copy and republish them to both prod machines, while standing at the machines in the prod area. Would like to be able to do this remotely as it's getting quite annoying and time consuming.
Ideas?

Have you tried using the Crystal Enterprise 10 Publishing Wizard? It is a small thick based client tool that allows users to publish to CE without CR.

Cheers

Are you using Win XP or higher for all machines? If so, you should be able to use the MS Remote Desktop utility and log onto the prod machines (and indeed dev server) from the comfort of your own PC. Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection

The pub wizard works fine, that's not my issue, I want to be able to edit and save a published CE report with CR without having to delete and republish it every time, you're supposed to be able to do this but it's not working for me.
All machines are Win 2005 Server.

Hi,

Info please:
OS of your CR PC and of th CE servers.

Be sure the user you connect to the Repository as has 'full control' over that folder and Report.

Also try using the IP address of the CE server not its machine or cluster name.

( One other thing I have noticed that can sometimes cause the 'can't write to error' in CR is to have the shortcut that launches CR running from your profile directory instead of starting in the same directory as the crw32.exe program itself - there can be PATH issues involved)

Did this happen before SP3 ( I have had problems with some CR service packs)..

All machines are Win 2005 Server, latest everything.
Using Administrator user.
Tried the IP, no difference.
Happened with SP2 and 3, never tried it on 1.
Weird thing is, even running CR on the CE machine in question it still has the problem.

But then I started thinking, if I did get this to work, the actual physical .rpt file would not be updated, it would only be the CE report object right? If we ever lost that CE then all the report changes would be lost as well, maybe better to keep doing it the hard way so we would at least have the latest .rpt files, I don't know.

Hi,
The original source .rpt would not ( as you figured out) be modified just the .rpt file stored in the FRS location for Input..This can be opened in CR and saved back to your source site ( with a meaningful name) if desired...

I mainly use 'in-place' editing of published reports for minor changes like formatting or typos, or for changing the data source..otherwise I use the Publishing Wizard, or the 'Add Object' option in the CMC...

Consider using the FRS as your source for saving reports, just make sure that you have proper backups.

Sicne you are likely saving historical instances, backups are already occuring, and since you probably want to always preserve h9istorical instances of changing reports, there's no disadvantage to always going through CE.
