I Do tech support, and Mac is not my specialty, I have a customer who has a macintosh with OSX, not sure if it's standard or jaguar. Anyway he has been unable to dial because he can't find the "phone icon" that was always there before, now I've gone into his system prefrences and checked his settings and they all seem correct, but he can't dail up, can someone please tell me how to make that phone icon come back, or some other way to dial up. This is probably so simple that many of you won't bother answering me(j/k) but I have no idea how do get him to dial up. Thanks in advance.

Was the phone icon in the preferences panel or on the desktop?

The preferences panel is based on the user signed into the machine. There is the root set of preference panes and each signed in user has their own that also appear with the root's preference icons. If your user signed in as someone else (knowingly or not) some preference icons may not appear. Try poking around in each individual user's folders for the preference items. If you must, you could probably copy all user-specific preference icons into the root preferences folder.

I am not a Mac right now to confirm directory paths so don't sue if the Mac fries.

Don't worry about Mac not being your specialty. Consider the Mac as a very elegant and friendly unix box.

1. To restore the telephone icon in the menu bar...
Open System Preferences->Network->Show: Internal Modem (if not available, then Show: Network Port Configuration and check the box for Internal Modem, then Show: Internal Modem)
Select the Modem tab, check the box for 'Show modem status in menu bar' (bottom, center).

2. To dial the modem without the icon in the menu bar...
(The following is from Mac Help, OS X version 10.2.1)

"Connecting to the Internet using dialup PPP

To connect:

Open Internet Connect, choose Internal Modem from the Configuration pop-up menu, and click Connect.

If you haven't entered your network settings, open Network preferences, choose Internal Modem from the Show pop-up menu, and enter the settings provided by your ISP."

(To open Internet Connect, go to Applications, then open Internet Connect.)
