After clearing out the websearch toolbar with a variety of spyware cleaners, I am left with two tmp files in the C:\Windows\Temp folder (WinXP Pro). I have tried (a) deinstalling all strange programmes; (b) deleting through Windows Explorer; (c) deleting in safe mode; (d)asking virus scanners to delete them when identified as 'web search' related etc. Every approach is met with messages like "cannot delete, you do not have access" or "file is in use" etc. Any suggestions?

boot in dos mode. from the dos prompt type
Code:
del c:\windows\temp\*.*
and confirm the question by pressing "y". reboot and hopefully everything under that folder will be gone.

hope this helps. peace! peace]

How do you boot WinXP in DOS mode? As far as I can tell, safe mode is as good as you can get. Even from the command window, the files will not delete.

Open the command window, then close Explorer:

Task Manager>Processes>explorer.exe <End Process>

You should now be able to delete the file using the command line.
