Hey all,

I'm in the process of moving my user files off of a server running Windows 2000 to a server running Windows 2003 R2. I'm taking my time in case I find any problems and I just found my first one. Previously I was able to right-click and drag a file to another window and when I let go I was given the option to "Create a Shortcut." Now that my files are on the 2003 server when I do that I get the following message:

Do you want to move or copy files from this zone?

There's no option to create a shortcut. At this point the only way to create a shortcut is to right-click on the file and choose Create Shortcut. That puts the shortcut next to the file, then I can drag the shortcut over to the window. This is going to create misery, pain and anguish for me if my users have to do it this way. Does anyone know how to retrieve my "Create Shortcuts Here" option and get it to work on my 2003 Server?

Thanks,

Joe B

If you click yes on that dialog you should get the normal right click menu with the Create Shortcut as an option.

Alternatively if you do not wish to see this message everytime you wish to create a shortcut, then remove the "Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration" component from the Windows Server 2003 R2 machine. To do this:

Go to Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs >Add/Remove Windows Components> uncheck Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration and click Next to uninstall the feature

Understand that this is an added security feature, but may often cause more pain than joy.

mrdenny, yeah that worked. I guess I should have "experimented" with it some more before posting.

IllogicallyLogical, I think that for now I'm going to leave the "Enhanced Security Configuration" as it is. This is going to cause me SOME pain, but I think the grumbling will be short lived.

Thanks,

Another annoyance that this will give you is that you can't launch EXEs off of a network share.

As a followup, I discovered that I CAN launch .exe files if I do it from the CLI. Installing programs from the CLI can be a drag but it sure beats walking around with a CD.

Thanks,
