In advance..any help is greatly appreciated....

I am an experienced Access user and I have to move a database to filemaker. Within filemaker,I am having trouble getting lookup fields to work with relationships. I've scaled it down to a simple example.\:

Employees (file)
last
first
employee_ID

Sales (a second file)
date
description
part #
client
employee_ID

Clearly I want the employee_ID category to be the relational category.

I can easily define the relationship.
But when I go to the Sales file, and I click on the employee_ID field and try to make it a lookup field (relationship is employee_ID=employee_ID) [e.g. link the employee_ID fields in both files) I get the message: "This lookup field uses 'employee_ID' in its definition. Please choose another field."

No matter what I do or try I cannot get this think to work?
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
DavidW

Employee-ID is your linking field. It is meaningless to try to lookup Employee-ID because it must already be there for the relationship to work.
Employee file ID = 6 matches records in Sales whare ID = 6 and vice versa.

unlike Access naming of the keys or related feild can be different
FM cares more about "perspective" and "where from" the relationshiop is comming....
-------SQL.based-
userID --> userID (1 -1 by default)

while
---------FM-
userID --> userID or userID ---> USErId
will still be 1-many ....or whatever

it is kinda funny that FM can not process "WHERE userID=1" but rather look up any Other fields....and based on relationship and lookups...
I guess "WHERE userID=x" is actually "current record with looked-up fields from related"
I hope this helps somewhat....
all the best!
