Hi,

I've just installed sql server 2008. When running the management studio I get the option of connecting to the database engine or sql server compact edition.

When I go to connect to the database engine with a local or domain administrator account, I can't create a new database -
I get the error message

"create database permission denied in database "master"" error 262

When I go to security, create new login and try to give my user domain user access to dbcreator I get another permission denied error (15247).

I've tried logging on with the sa default username and password, but no luck.

In short, I can't create a database and can't give myself permissions to do so.

Please help.

I had a similar issue. When I installed SQL Server it prompted me for a System Administrator Account. I told SQL Server to use Windows Authentication knowing that I had administrative Rights to windows. Unfortunately I did something wrong still not sure what but my Windows Admin Rights ended up not applying to SQL Server. I had to re-install using Mixed-Mode and gave the sa account the System Admin Rights. Then I was able to assign the System Admin Rights to my Windows User Account and everything worked well.

Assuming SQL 2008 is similar to 2005, try running the SQL Surface Area Config tool and adding a new administrator.

Unfortunately the surface area configuration tool has been deprecated, I managed to find a way to restore it, but no option to add a new administrator account

May have to reinstall as mentioned :-(

By default SQL Server 2008 doesn't add the local admins to the sysadmin fixed server role.

When you go through the installation wizard there's a screen which asks you what users should be a sysadmin (I don't remember the wording). If you don't select any Windows users then none will be sysadmin and you won't be able to do a whole lot, especially if you are setup for Windows only auth.
