Recently had nail.exe infection on a client pc. PC would only boot in safe mode and could not copy off my docs before reinstalling XP/home. Could not edit boot.ini so removed HDD. Installed XP on another HDD and set original HDD as a slave, hoping to copy over my docs and then re-format the original drive.

Everything was going fine and xp found the original HDD in my computer but cannot open my docs or copy it across. it says access denied or the disk is full or write protected it shows as 'read only' and will not allow a change.

Have tried to access it as Administrator but still no go it behaves as if it password protected but the user says it was not.

Any suggestions as there is some important data in my docs.

You need to take ownership of the folder (if its ntfs filestore). If the XP you installed on other dricve is Home also, you'll need to do this in Safe Mode from an account with administrator access (its in the advnced bit of security tab, and that only appears in safe mode with XP Home).

Thanks for the reply,
I am advising the client over the telephone so it is a bit frustrating, however I got him to start the OS in safe mode (it is xp home) log on as administrator and then look at tools> folder options> view and I was expecting him to report that he had a check box 'use simple file shareing'(as appears in xppro) however he said that the check box option did not exist.
Maybe I missunderstood your advice. I did get him to download and install 'File security manager' an application that is supposed to give controll over security permissions similar to XPpro however it kept returning access denied.

any further suggestions appreciated

You did misunderstand. You need to access the properties of the folder you need to read. In Safe Mode, the security tab will be present. In there, the advanced button will allow access to the owner tab. Here you can change the owner to the current user. Make sure afterwards that the current user is listed on the first security screen - if not add it with full permissions.

(you don't need to go to tools, folder options).

simplified sharing is always on in Home - you can't turn it off (but in Pro, turning it off gives access to security tab in normal mode - I suspect that you confused that with what I said).
