can't convert old WP6 password protect docs (my own, know password)

IS there anyone who can offer suggestion. These are old WP files that I myself password protected and no, as I no longer that Word Perfect on my computer, I can't open them. Is there a way to do it without having to track down someone with Word Perfect who might be able to open them? (and I might have messed up by changing the file extension to doc instead of wpd, should that matter?)

Is using "recover text from any file" an option?
