Hello. I'm have some trouble setting up my router.
This is what I have:
PC 1
DELL P3 667mhZ
Win XP Pro.
128RAM

PC 2
DELL Celeron 900mhZ
Win XP Pro.
128RAM

Router
Linksys Ethernet cable/dsl router
4-port
UPnP
model no: BEFSR41

I followed the instructions well. I hooked up the router to the cable line, attached the router to PC 1 via a ethernet cable. According to the "follow-me" guide, after I attached the routers and such, I entered Linksys' default IP address in IE, when connected to them, I enterted my info. like my IP address, my Subnet Mask, my domain name and such. I then attached my second PC to the router.

All that went well. I even get a different IP addresses on both the PCs. But I can't connect to the internet. How come? Did I miss something here??

Oh BTW, the router came with a "instal me first" CD, which i did also, it did an auto search for the PCs and router et al. but it couldn't find a connection to the internet, how come?

Thanks for the help.

Did your cable company assign you a static IP address? Most cable systems require the router to be set to "Obtain an address automaticly."

You may also have to use the "MAC address cloning" feature of the router. Run ipconfig /all from a command session on your computer, and write down the line that says: "Physical Address"

Then in the router's web-based setup, Advanced Features, use the MAC cloning screen to enter those same numbers.

Push briefly the reset button on the router.

bcastner, hi, I have dynamic IP, and in the web-based config I did choose the "dynamic IP" from the list.
This MAC address, is it the same as Subnet Mask address?? Cause if it is, I entered that number as well. I even tried restarting the computer. But I didn't reset the router, I just unplugged everything then.
What else do you recommend besides the MAC addy and refreshing the router??

Is the WAN Link lit up on the router? If not your problem may be the cable itself. I had a similar issue a few weeks ago and it was due to an incorrect cable. I had to use a crossover cable instead of a straight-through in order for the router to accept the signal from the internet.

Guijnet,

The MAC address you want is on the NIC adapter of the computer you used before the router to connect to the modem. If you do from a command session, IPCONFIG /ALL one of the lines of information displayed says "Physcial Address" and then gives some numbers in hexadecimal.

Those are the numbers to put into the router in MAC cloning, not your subnet address.

Hi guys, I still couldn't get it to work so I called tech support, and after an hour or this-and-that, we concluded that the router was defective. So I will go to Circuit City tomm. and exchange it.
I'll keep everyone posted. :)

I bet your Router is not defective. You need to hit the reset button on the back of the router to start all over. Dont do any of the setting up of the IP address. If you changed anything in your TCP/IP settings..change it back. Linksys routers change their versions all the time so somethings might have changed...just let me know. These directions are real general because I dont know anything about your system.

Step 1: Go into IE and type 192.168.1.1 in the URL. You will then have access to the routers built in software.

Step 2: If using DSL then choose PPoE and put your name and password in the settings and choose to connect on demand, otherwise leave everything alone.

Step 3: Right click network neighborhood and choose properties. Double click your Local Area Connection and choose properties. Click on Internet Properties TCP/IP one time, then select properties. Make sure it is set to obtain IP address automatically and obtain DNS automatically. Click on the Advanced button and make sure the top box says use DHCP and in the bottom box click add and type 192.168.1.1 (leave the metric box checked), then click Add. Click on the WINS tab and make sure the top text box is empty (if it isnt remove everything in there). Make sure NetBIOS is set to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Step 4: Go into internet explorer and on the menu choose Tools - Internet Options - Connections tab - Lan Settings. Make sure you are set to Never dial a connection - Make sure Dial-up and private network settings box is EMPTY (if not remove whats in there). Then click on the LAN settings button and make sure NOTHING is checked in there and click ok.

Step 5: Click on Start - Run - type "CMD" and hit enter. Virtual DOS will open. Type "ipconfig -all" and hit enter. Make sure you only have 1 ethernet adapter. If not you will need to remove all but the one for your network card to make your life easier.

Step 5: If this still doesnt work then type in your DNS servers IP addresses, but do NOT type in an IP address for the WAN OR for your PC's. Your computers will be on the same subnet and therefore be allowed to see eachother if you let DHCP assign your IP addresses.

Notes: Your IP address for each PC should be along the lines of 192.168.1.100 or .101 or .102...etc. You can check your IP address by repeating step 5.

Other things can be wrong, I could write a term paper on the list of problems I've had with linksys routers. Do yourself a favor and buy a D-Link router. I wrote all this down off the top of my head so you might have to use common sense if I forgot to tell you to click a button here or there (sorry, dont have a linksys router).
