Gurus,

Need ur help.
I am remotely administering an IBM AIX server (RS6000 P series) using telnet.
I am trying to use SMIT to increase /home FS size.
I unmount the FS using smit, increase the size and later, i am unable to connect to the system using telnet (The msg i get is "Connection refused by the remote host"; ftp also fires the same error) Also, I see that the http port is down.. I am not able to access the website hosted on that machine.

How do i connect to this machine now. Will the restart solve the problem? Or anything else i should do (like restarting the inetd daemon or running /etc/tcp.clean script?)

Why does this happen? and any troubleshooting tips?

HELP!

Hi,
if you can, go at the console of the machine or
use a local opeator to manage this situation.

You don't need unmount jfs to increase size.
Use smit or
df /home
and
chfs -a size=999 /home.

Maby, with /home unmounted, some applications
have saved data in /home/????, going to full
root jfs ( / ).

If this is the situation, clear all data under /home,
(when /home is unmounted) then, give a mount all, and see if /home is mounted.

bye.

Hi,

Do you connect with root user ?
Is your root user home directory under /home ? regards, [afro]

If you can restart services, I belive you can access
the syetem with previously session or by console.
Clear me this question.

If you access the system see if root jfs (hd4) is full.
Normally the timed daemon is launched by inetd superdaemon
when it receives a call at the port of telnet. If the system
was not modified (commented telnet line in /etc/services or other) and root fs is not full, after a "refresh -s inetd" or kill pid of timed (if there are not other user in telnet),
follow the levw indication and try again.

NOTE:
The problem is not if the user is root or not: when a system
denies access by telnet, it refuses the command

telnet hostname

before prompting Login:

Well guys,

The server is at the remote locvation where i cant reach.
Also, the admins there are dumb; Inspite of being at the console, they didnt know how to restart the network service..
RAther not to take any chance, i asked them to reboot the server hpoing that its a simple command and the TCPIP locks also might get cleared from the machine..

And the trick worked! I am able to access the system remotely!

Anyway, thanks to you all guys..

I must say that i want to get to the root cause as to how come this happened.. Any ideas?

bro,
just thought, probably the time you unmount your home, your root user is unside this directory. Or probably, your telnet daemon accidentaly died and you need to restart the service from the console itself..
So, the time you reboot the machine, all the services were refreshed in a way...

Well,
While unmounting the /home FS, the root user was not in that directory.. I am wondering how come the telnetd die accidentally when everything else was fine.. I never faced this kinda situation earlier.. HAd it been WINDOWS machine, i would hav understood! But this is UNIX machine!
