I've just started up my first Linux box but was unable to connect to the internet through LAN. I access the internet through a proxy server and must obtain my IP from DHCP. Internet access under Win98 works fine but my Linux box kept returning the message: cannot locate server.netscape.com...etc. Looks like it cannot resolve the domain names. Telnet to other sites under shell prompt also works. What to do next? Thank you.

Check your /etc/resolv.conf

That should list your DNS servers. If it does not, you'd be able to browse by ip address (ping a site from your Win box to find an ip address) but not by name. If you say telnet by ip is working then that is the problem.

If you can't browse by ip ( then your dhcp didn't catch: check ifconfig -a and see if you got an address.

Hi rareeree
if you access into the internet via a proxy server
you should do the following (in case you are using direct proxy configuration)
*open the netscape browser
*go to edit
*go into preferences
*click on the small icon befor advanced
*click on proxy
*then change the default way wich is "direct access to internet"
and choose "automatic proxy configuration"
and then you should give the path to your proxy config it well be something like "hope this well help.

Thank you for the info. Yes, I have got an IP assigned and can browse by IP address but not by domain name. But if my Win98 box is configured NOT to use DNS, then what DNS information should I be setting? Is my DHCP server (ie my ISP) going to set that up for me as well?

Where is the residing? My own machine or at our servers?

Thanks
