Can't Connect To Internet Thru Hub

I have a home office with a Linkskey LK-810PB 8 port hub which has 4 Win 98 machines connected in a peer to peer network. I have a Direcway Satellite modem connected to this hub and it works fine with these 4 machines. I can get on the internet thru any machine.

I ran a cat5 cable from my wife's computer (XP Pro) to the hub. I get a message saying there is limited or no connectivity (there is none) because the network did not assign an IP address to the computer. When I tell XP to fix the problem, it tells me to contact my network administrator. If I connect my wife's machine directly to the Direcway modem it works fine.

Is there some way I can find out what the IP address should be and manually set it on the XP machine? All we want to do is share the internet connection - not interested in sharing files or printers.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

George

Thanks for your response.

I did check the cable (1st thing!). It is good. I have a 100 ft run from the XP computer to the hub. That cable works when I plug it directly into the Direcway modem instead of the hub.

Any other suggestions? Is there a problem with one machine running XP while the others run Win 98SE?

Problem solved! Plugged the cable into another socket in the hub and it worked. I guess I have a bad socket.

Thanks,
George King
