I am running Red Hat 7.1 with wu-ftpd. I turned on the server, and can ping the ftp servers IP, but i cant ftp into the server. I am trying to get in using windows xp.

cant connect to ftp server

tried to ftp with the IP :
ftp 192.168.0.104

found the problem. I had to turn my firewall off by using lokkit.
which poses my next question. If i have to turn my firewall off to access ftp, then what type of security can i implement to keep my box from not totally being f'd up?
I didnt try using a medium firewall setting which i will try. hopefully i can set that and still ftp in.
