Can't connect bt77 gps with mda vario/i-mate kjam

has anyone got any advice on the above? I can pair the two devices but the connetion doesn't work.
I select a com port for the gps receiver to use say com 6 for example.
Then I go to the GPS settings page and select the make of my GPS receiver(bt77). Next I select a com port (it should be com 6 if i'm right) BUT the only ports i can see in the drop down menu are com9,infrared,com3,com0,com2 and serial.
I'm stuck!!!!
any help or advice would be great.
