pc A has a printer connected to lpt1 and is shared, listed in directory.
pc B needs to connect. Add printer wizard sees the printer, but then cant connect when double clicking, reason given Name is incorrect or the printer is not active(or something like that).
How can I add this shared lpt1 printer to be available from pc B.
Am I forgetting my basic lpt1 rules?
Both pc's on same domain, XP pro. No other connectivity problems with both, shared folders and such.

Is there a more specific error message? Event Viewer maybe?

Post the exact text of the error, that helps with Google. Just for fun, is it feasible to physically connect the printer to PC "B" and see if PC "A" can use it?

Sharing a printer should be Add Printer, A Network Printer, Next, Next, Find Now, highlight printer and OK.

I can connect printer to either pc and have it work from that pc.
Is it possible I need - net use lpt1: \\pcname\shared printer?
I tried this but I just get message back outlining correct syntax of net use...
Ill try to get exact error.

OK it gets better...
I moved the printer to B.
From a third pc, I add printer and locate using the name, it lists 2 printers. I double clicked on top one and 'connected' without errors. Im assuming this was the pc a connection.
I tried to connect to bottom one listed, and get -
Winodows cannot connect to the printer. either the printer name was typed incorrectly or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server.
...sigh...

Try temporarily disabling Windows Firewall on both PCs. What happens?

Or do you have any other firewall software in place like Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, PC Tools etc? These should similarly be temporarily disabled to check printing.

well so how silly am I.
For some reason, pc a cannot be seen anyhwere on the network, even though its on the domain, outlook works, can browse anyhwere.
But when I look for it, every other pc name is listed except pc a.
So never mind any of this till I get that figured out...

Do you have a mix of XP Pro and XP Home? If so, check that the PCs are all set to the same workgroup.

ok now for the funny part. For some reason the pc has different ip address and subnet..
so I snoop around...someone in their infinite wisdom purchased some sort of verizon phone and had the pc net work cable plugged into it.
So got rid of that bad boy, all is right again, everythings working. Never thought to check what port the pc was plugged into..lesson learned.
