I had a Linksys Wireless router and I bought this 891w to replace it, for home use. I have a DSL modem. So, i am coming off the modem into fe8 on the router. I just cant seem to get an IP from my ISP. I have no problem getting an IP if I connect the modem up directly to one of my PC's. DHCP is working fine from the router. Any help is appreciated. Here is my config:

My first guess - Dialler hasn't got an IP NAT INSIDE command.

Also - I'm a littel worried about the way you're doing DHCP on the WAN side - it's not it's necessarily wrong it's just I'm not familiar with it. I'd suggest as the dialler makes the PPP it should do the DHCP and get an address rather than the Ethernet do it and pass an IP to the dialler.

You should be able to check if you're getting an Ip using sh int.

If it works like this I'd be interested what's going on - if you get an IP on the ethernet for example and that's part of the PPP connection - forgive me - I've not set up DSL only ATM

is the modem in bridge mode??

I hate all Uppercase... I don't want my groups to seem angry at me all the time! =)
- ColdFlame (vbscript forum)

Try to connect modem to the right interface (WAN)

interface Dialer0
ip address dhcp client-id FastEthernet8

try

interface Dialer0
ip address negotiated

That's the only part I looked at so far...more to follow...

OK, thanks all. I will try suggested ideas tonight when I get home.
Unclerico, re: the modem being bridged...this is a sbc/yahoo(att) modem. I did see procedure below to configure modem but have not tried. There is no access code listed on the bottom of my modem. Now my model says 5100, not 5100b but I will check it out:

How can I put the 5100b in bridge mode? (#8722)
The modem itself, with the shipped firmware, supports 3 modes; PPPoE on board, Bridge mode, Bridge mode with IP Address pass Issuance. To put the modem in Bridge modem do the following:

1. In your web browser browse to »192.168.0.1 This address will be located on a yellow sticker on the bottom of your modem.

2. The first screen will ask you for your Modem Access Code. This also will be located on the same yellow sticker.

3. Select Advanced from the blue buttons on the left.

4. Click the PPP locations button.

5. The modem may ask your for the Modem Access Code again. If so type it in again and click continue.

6. Select the radio button labeled, "Bridged Mode (PPPoE is not used)"

7. Click Save Changes.

8. A "PPP Location Warning" page will come up. Click "Change PPP Location."

9. A "Restart Needed" page will come up. Click "Restart"

10. Reboot your computer and router (if applicable.) You will now need some form of PPPoE software on your computer or a router that supports PPPoE. Be warned that even if you are using Enternet 300 or XP/OSX's built in PPPoE SBC tech support will not troubleshoot connectivity issues until you have put your modem back in PPPoE on board mode.

making some progress, after your suggestion burt I am seeing an ip now on dialer0 from my ISP. I also added

ip nat inside

for dialer0 per suggestion from Peter. Still not getting out to the Internet. More suggestions welcome.....

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Cisco Configuration Professional (Cisco CP) is installed on this device
and it provides the default username "cisco" for one-time use. If you have
already used the username "cisco" to login to the router and your IOS image
supports the "one-time" user option, then this username has already expired.
You will not be able to login to the router with this username after you exit
this session.

It is strongly suggested that you create a new username with a privilege level
of 15 using the following command.

username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>

Replace <myuser> and <mypassword> with the username and password you want to
use.

change this
Code:
ip nat inside source list 1 interface FastEthernet8 overload
to this
Code:
ip nat inside source list 1 interface dialer0 overload

Also, access-list 1 needs to be

access-list 1 permit 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255

if you want that subnet to get out, and not 10.10.10.0/24---192.168 is on the LAN...

oh man I screwed up. I had to change my password for ISP
so How do I change the ppp authenication password? I cant do it through the gui:

!
interface Dialer0
ip address negotiated
no ip redirects
no ip unreachables
no ip proxy-arp
ip flow ingress
ip nat outside
ip virtual-reassembly
encapsulation ppp
ip tcp adjust-mss 1452
dialer pool 1
dialer-group 1
no cdp enable
ppp authentication chap pap callin
ppp chap hostname rripplinger@sbcglobal.net
ppp chap password 7 153E5A1F05082A2631
ppp pap sent-username rripplinger@sbcglobal.net password 7 153E5A1F05082A2631
!

ppp chap password <password>
ppp pap sent-username rripplinger@sbcglobal.net password <password>

just for future reference, always scrub your config of usernames, passwords, and at least the last octet of your real IPs. we can very easily decrypt your password

Yup. The level 7 passwords are nothing more than a Vigenere cypher, circa 1500 A.D. ...VERY weak!
