When logged in as a user and I try to change that user's password I get the following error:

Setting password for user: support
Sorry.

Password request denied.
Reason: Invalid old password.

I have checked scoadmin and saw everything was ok. I can not find any TA's explaining this.

I can change any user's password as root.

This is a 5.0.4 system.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Are you paying close attention to what it is asking?

The first thing it asks is for the OLD password. If you are trying to put the new password in then, that "invalid old password" is what you will immediately get.

You need to give the old password and then the new password (twice).

The message that I receive happens immediatley after hitting the enter key. I am not given an opportunity to enter anything one the enter key is pressed.

As user support, at the prompt I type:

#passwd support
Setting password for user: support
Sorry.

Password request denied.
Reason: Invalid old password.

I can change the support password when logged in as root. This problem is for all users, except root.

Seems to me I've sen that, but can't recall it exactly-

I'd suggest running authck -p

tried the authck -p. unsuccessful.

I'll keep looking for an answer.

Thanks for your help.

LOng shot, but check perms on /dev/tty - that could do something like what you are seeing.

(/dev/tty is used by programs such as passwd to get input from the keyboard. Normally it s/b 666 perms)

That did it!!! Thanks.

Checked the permissions on this file and checked it on another server.

Changed permissions to 666 and chgrp to terminal and it worked.

Thanks again for your help.
