We have a solaris server was setup by a contractor and he was long gone. Now, when users try to change their passwords they get error message permission denied

passwd: Changing password for system
Permission denied

Thanks for your help

This is a guess but have you checked the MIN CHANGE and MAX CHANGE fields? Maybe that has something to do with it.

Hi,
Have you tried
passwd <username>

Hope this helps,
Krish

Another guess!
Check the /etc/paswd and /etc/shadow files.. MAy be the permisions hav been changed!

OR, edit the /etc/shadow file and clear the password of the user. Later, u can change it..

The permissions for /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow should be

-r--r--r-- 1 root sys 7054 Nov 22 2001 /etc/passwd

and

-r-------- 1 root sys 3457 Jun 6 11:32 /etc/shadow

I had a similar problem to you a few weeks ago when /etc/passwd was changed.

I assume that you can still change the users passwords when you log on as root?

Another thing came to mind lately;
Hav u changed the group memberships of the root user (or the user with which u r trying to change the passwd)?
