I am trying to set up an internal network at my office which will allow incoming VPN connections. I use a DSL modem (vs. a router) and connect it to one NIC on a machine running MS Small Business Server and connect a second NIC on the machine to the network Hub. Problem is, I cannot surf any URL using HTTP but I CAN using FTP. It is not a DNS translation problem, IP addresses don't work either with HTTP but DO with FTP.

Info:
I have a static IP address with DSL.
When I connect the modem to a W2K Pro computer, it works fine.
I can ping any web URL and get a response from the command prompt.

I am confused... please help!

being you are using a router in line with the dsl modem, and the server you are running, check the ip setup for the server... server pc's by default have a static ip... where as win2k pro pc's are dynamic by default... and with using a router, it is probably tring to issue an ip to the pc it's connected to... if it can't, it probably doesn't let it have access....

i may be wrong, but it's an idea to check on...

Yeah, often the xDSL box will give your win2kPro machine a DHCP allocated IP address and allow it to conenct but your server will alerady have an address so will not. Do you have access to the config interface on the Dsl box? From a win2kpro machine, try pointing your browser or a telnet session to the IP address of the DSL box as it may reveal a management interface for you to view configuration settings etc. If it is telco equipment, ask them for a config - you might get lucky!
