XP machine can access to the internet in LAN. When using dailup, it is unable to access the internet with the browser or email program. The routing table and ipconfig /all look good. Can ping any web sites but ping will show some characters like []and O-:(see below)

for example ping yahoo.com:
Pinging yahoo.com [] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 66.218.71.198: bytes=32 time=207ms TTL=243 Reply from 66.218.71.198: bytes=32 time=230ms TTL=243 Reply from 66.218.71.198: bytes=32 time=215ms TTL=243 Reply from 66.218.71.198: bytes=32 time=252ms TTL=243 Ping statistics for O-: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 207ms, Maximum = 252ms, Average = 226ms

Also, after using dialup, the xp can't access the internet in the LAN any more even after rebooting. The only way to fix this problem is to do system restore. Any ideas?

Have you checked under IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connection, the different settings you will need for dialup and LAN connections?

You might also have some Winsock service stack corruption. Try running this tool, and after a reboot get a clean connection on your LAN. Then add the dial-up option, and set the IE Connection settings as appropriate. The tool to clear-up Winsock service stacks can be found here:
You also should disable the XP firewall, ICF, so as to have that out of the picture while trying to get everything to work correctly.

bcastner,

Thank you for the help. That is my client's computer. I will try what you suggested and will let you know.

Winnsockfix only fixes Winsock service stack problems, it does not deal with other connection problems.

Have you tried running the modem and the network connectivity troubleshooters in Help?

Start with the modem troubleshooter, then follow with the LAN side connection issues.

A good link for the diagnostic routines in XP:
