Can't boot up Windows 98 (SCANDISK problem) 1

Whenever I try to start my Windows 98 computer, I get the following messages before it completely shuts itself down again:

First, I get the
Warning: Windows did not finish loading on the previous attempt...

HIMEM is testing extended memory..Done.

One or more of your disk drives may have developed bad sectors. Press any key to run SCANDISK with surface analysis on these drives...

There was an error running SCANDISK.EXE, or it was cancelled. Run SCANDISK for Windows as you may still have errors on your disk(s). Press any key to continue starting Windows.

[i press a key]

Windows 98 startup screen. It runs for a little bit and then it shuts down.

Is there any hope of ever getting this started again without reinstalling windows and wiping out my data?
 
Try booting with a startup floppy that has scandisk copied to it, then run scandisk. Your problem is bad sectors on the hdd that need to be corrected or marked unuseable. IF these sectors contain OS files you are probably better off copying your necessary files to another hdd using DOS (startup disk).
